About Sri Garbharakshambigai Amman Temple

The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Mullaivananathar and his consort Parvati as Garbharakshambigai, set within Mullai Vanam ("jasmine forest"), traditionally a site of penance for sages including Gautama and Markandeya. According to legend, a devotee named Vedikai was blessed by the Goddess to safely carry and deliver her child despite grave danger; grateful, she asked the Goddess to remain and protect all women and unborn children — the Goddess agreed, taking the name Garbharakshambigai. The place came to be called Thirukarukavur, "where pregnancy is protected." A related legend tells of the divine cow Kamadhenu creating a milk tank (Ksheerakundam) here to feed Vedikai's child when she had no milk of her own; the tank still exists. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified by the Nayanar saints Appar, Sundarar, and Sambandar, and features a five-tiered Rajagopuram, 31 Chola-era inscriptions, and a Swayambhu Lingam.
