About Sarangapani Temple

Sri Sarangapani Temple in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, is the 13th Divya Desam. Regarded alongside Srirangam and Tirupati as the holy trinity of Vaishnavism (Ubhaya Vaikuntham), it was sung by seven great Alvars in 51 pasurams. This temple is universally venerated as the fountainhead of the revival of Sri Vaishnava literature: it was upon hearing devotees chant Nammazhwar's pasuram "Aravamudhe Adiyen Udalam Ninbaal Anbaye" here that Acharya Nathamuni set out to recover and compile the lost 4,000 verses of the Nalayira Divya Prabandham.

The sanctum sanctorum is an architectural marvel carved in the form of a majestic celestial chariot (Ratha Bandham) complete with monumental stone wheels drawn by caparisoned horses and elephants. The presiding deity, Lord Sarangapani, reclines in the extremely rare Utthana Sayana posture: answering Sage Hema Rishi's prayer, the Lord is seen half-rising up from His serpent bed to greet the sage with divine affection.

Goddess Komalavalli Thayar, who emerged from the golden lotus waters of Potramarai Kulam, holds the royal status of Padi Thandatha Pathini (She never leaves Her palace shrine). Like Srirangam and Thiruvellarai, the temple features twin solstitial gateways: the Uttarayana Vaasal and the Dakshinayana Vaasal.
