Dev Deepawali — literally the Diwali of the Gods — is celebrated fifteen days after the main Diwali on the full moon night of Kartik Purnima. It is considered the most spiritually potent night of the Kartik month, when the gods themselves are believed to descend from their celestial abodes to bathe in the sacred Ganga at Varanasi (Kashi). On this night, the ghats of Varanasi — from Assi Ghat to Rajghat — are transformed into a breathtaking river of light as lakhs of earthen diyas are lit simultaneously along the steps of every ghat, creating one of the most visually spectacular religious events in the world.

Dev Deepawali marks several converging sacred occasions. Most prominently, it commemorates Tripurotsav — Lord Shiva's destruction of the three demon cities (Tripura) built by the asura Tarakaksha and his brothers. On this Kartik Purnima night, Shiva shot a single divine arrow that destroyed all three flying cities simultaneously, and the gods celebrated by lighting lamps across the heavens — an event mirrored on earth at Varanasi's ghats. The festival also coincides with Kartik Snan — the completion of the auspicious month-long dawn bathing ritual — and the Kartik Puja performed by Vaishnavas.

Beyond Varanasi, Kartik Purnima is one of the most sacred full moon nights in Hinduism. It is the night of Guru Nanak Jayanti (Sikhs' most sacred day), the Pushkar Camel Fair reaches its grand climax at Ajmer, and it is an auspicious day for temple visits and Ganga snan across India. The river Ganga at Varanasi on this night, flanked by the golden glow of a million lamps, is considered a direct window to the divine.

Significance of Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepawali centers on Lord Shiva as the supreme deity of the occasion, honoring his cosmic victory over the asuras in the Tripurotsav legend. As the destroyer of evil and the lord of Kashi, Shiva's presence pervades every lamp lit on the Ganga ghats on this night. His divine form as Tripurantaka — the destroyer of Tripura — is especially invoked.

The Ganga herself, revered as a goddess (Ganga Mata), plays a central role. The ritual bathing and lamp offerings to the Ganga on this night honor her as the divine mother who receives the gods on their descent to earth. The lamps floated on the Ganga are offerings to her.

Lord Vishnu is also honored, as Kartik is his most sacred month — Vishnu awakens from his cosmic sleep (Chaturmas/Yoganidra) four days before on Devutthana Ekadashi, and Kartik Purnima is the culmination of a month-long celebration of his awakening. Together, Shiva and Vishnu — the two supreme deities of Varanasi — preside over Dev Deepawali as a joint celebration of cosmic light over darkness.

How to celebrate Dev Deepawali 2026

1. Observe a ritual bath (Ganga snan or any sacred river bath) before sunrise on Kartik Purnima — this is considered one of the most meritorious acts of the Hindu calendar.

2. Visit a Shiva temple and offer Bilva leaves, milk, and flowers; recite the Shiva Panchakshara mantra and pray for Tripurotsav blessings.

3. If in Varanasi: reach the ghats by late afternoon to secure a spot for the lamp-lighting ceremony; participate in the collective ghat puja organized by pandits.

4. Prepare earthen diyas — traditionally 108 or 1008 diyas for home puja, or as many as possible.

5. At sunset (the main ceremony time), light all the diyas and arrange them in rows on the steps of the ghat or the steps of your home.

6. Offer lit diyas to the Ganga or any nearby water body by floating them on a leaf or clay boat.

7. Perform Ganga aarti or participate in the Varanasi Ganga Aarti which on this night becomes a grand multi-ghat event.

8. Recite the Kartik Purnima Katha and pray to Shiva as Tripurantaka.

9. Distribute prasad — kheer (rice pudding) and seasonal fruits are traditional.

10. Perform Satyanarayan Puja or Vishnu Puja as this is also a sacred Vaishnava occasion.

Dev Deepawali 2026 — FAQs

Dev Deepawali 2026 falls on Tuesday, November 24, 2026. It is celebrated on Kartik Purnima — the full moon of the Kartik month — exactly fifteen days after the main Diwali.

Dev Deepawali is most grandly celebrated in Varanasi (Kashi), where the ghats of the Ganga are lit with over a million earthen diyas simultaneously at sunset. It is also observed across India as Kartik Purnima — with Karthigai Deepam in Tamil Nadu and sacred bathing at Pushkar and other tirthas.

Dev Deepawali celebrates Tripurotsav — Lord Shiva's destruction of the three demon cities (Tripura) built by the asuras. The gods celebrated this victory by lighting lamps in the heavens, which devotees replicate by lighting lakhs of diyas on Varanasi's ghats. It is also the night when all gods are believed to descend to bathe in the Ganga at Kashi.

Diwali (main night) falls on Kartik Amavasya (new moon) and celebrates Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya. Dev Deepawali falls 15 days later on Kartik Purnima (full moon) and celebrates Lord Shiva's Tripurotsav and the divine descent of all gods to Varanasi's Ganga ghats. Dev Deepawali is sometimes called the 'Diwali of the Gods.'

Kartik Purnima is considered the most sacred full moon of the Hindu calendar. Bathing in any holy river on this day earns merit equal to all tirthas combined. It marks Tripurotsav (Shiva's victory), the completion of Kartik Vrat, Guru Nanak Jayanti, and Karthigai Deepam in Tamil Nadu.

On Dev Deepawali night in Varanasi, all 84 ghats of the Ganga are lit with lakhs of earthen diyas in a synchronized ceremony. Priests perform Ganga aarti from decorated boats on the river. Thousands of devotees and tourists from across the world come to witness the spectacular sight of a million lamps reflected in the sacred Ganga.

Dev Deepawali and Guru Nanak Jayanti (Guru Purab) both fall on Kartik Purnima and thus often coincide. Guru Nanak Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and is one of the most important Sikh festivals. In 2026, both fall on November 24.

Karthigai Deepam is the South Indian equivalent of Dev Deepawali, celebrated on Kartik Purnima in Tamil Nadu. The most spectacular Karthigai Deepam is at Tiruvannamalai, where a massive fire beacon (Mahadeepam) is lit atop the Arunachala hill — visible for miles — symbolizing Shiva as the column of infinite light (Jyoti Swarupa).
