About Sri Kalyanasundareswarar Temple, Thirumanancheri

The temple was constructed by the Chola queen Sembiyanmadevi and is counted among the 275/276 Paadal Petra Sthalams glorified in the Tevaram hymns of the Nayanar saints Tirugnanasambandar, Tirunavukkarasar (Appar), and Sundarar. According to legend, Goddess Parvati was cursed and reborn on earth as Kokilambal, daughter of sage Bharadvaja; Lord Shiva, as Udhvaganathar (Kalyanasundareswarar), married her here with the blessings of Vishnu and the other gods — hence the name Thirumanancheri, "the place of marriage." The temple's core ritual involves a devotee receiving a garland worn by the divine couple; after marriage takes place, the couple returns to the temple wearing that same garland as thanksgiving.
